How does the beauty of butterflies influence their conservation?

08.01.2026

We encourage participation in this scientific study by completing a (very enjoyable) survey for the Unveiling project, conducted in collaboration with the Faculties of Biology and Philosophy of the University of Florence. Anyone can take part—not only scientists! We particularly welcome students and people with no direct connection to biology.

“Through the Unveiling project, we investigate how the beauty of butterflies shapes our conservation-related choices. We have developed an online survey in which participants evaluate a series of photographs of European butterflies (sourced from the iNaturalist platform). Other parts of the test explore additional aesthetic responses. Our aim is to understand how different species attract human attention and whether aesthetic preferences influence which species we notice, study, photograph, and ultimately protect. These insights may help refine conservation priorities and identify effective flagship species that engage the public. Help us by completing this original 15-minute survey, after which you will learn which butterfly family best reflects your personality. The survey is available in Polish at www.unveiling.eu by selecting the language in the top-right corner.”

Thank you for your engagement, and we encourage you to share the survey with your family and friends!
