The Laboratory of Palaeobiology conducts research into the history of vegetation during the last 120,000 years of the Quaternary (Warta Glaciation, Eemian Interglacial, Vistula Glaciation, Holocene), with a particular focus on natural and anthropogenic changes in vegetation in northeastern Poland. Palaeobotanical studies are conducted in close cooperation with specialists in other disciplines of palaeoecology (palaeozoology, palaeoalgology, geochemistry, geophysics), as well as archaeologists and historians from many research institutions. The paleozoological strand of the Laboratory’s scientific activity focuses on the broadly defined evolutionary history of penguins (Sphenisciformes), with particular emphasis on Antarctic representatives of this order.
